The Oldest House
The Oldest House is a peculiar St Augustine
Attraction and historic spot and one place that many
visitors the Old City like to tour when they are
staying here and enjoying a Vacation St Augustine.
The Gonzalez-Alvarez House, as it is called, is the
oldest surviving Spanish Colonial dwelling in the
entire city, and—believe it or not—the entire state
of Florida. The Old City is called such because it
was the first successful site of a Spanish colony in
the mainland area that is now known as the United
States. The Oldest House is the oldest remaining
dwelling that exists from that period; it is a
remarkable building that tells numerous stories that
span through four centuries.
The
piece of land on which the Oldest House is located
has been occupied since the 1600s; the house that
currently occupies the site dates back to the early
part of the 18th century. Surviving through three
hundred years, the home saw the Old City experience
fighting and turmoil as it passed from the Spanish
to the English, and its most famous resident, Maria
Evans Fenwick, a local of St Augustine about whom a
book by author Eugenia Price was written, has led to
its fame as a historic St Augustine Attraction. The
book, Maria, was loosely based on Fenwick's time in
St Augustine and solidified her place, as well, in
St Augustine's unique and long history. In addition
to the touring the home and its furnishings,
visitors can take a look at what a typical 18th
century kitchen, which is separate from the main
house to ensure that the main dwelling quarters were
safe from fire and other hazards experienced from
cooking. Touring the home, guests often marvel at
the amazing Coquina rock walls and crude, early
water filtration system that was quite novel for
homes that date back to the 17th century.
In addition to the tours of the Oldest House St
Augustine, your admission ticket also allows you to
visit the Oldest House Garden, the Manucy Museum,
the Toyar House, and the I. Edwards Gallery, all of
which are located on or near the premises of the St
Augustine Oldest House. The gardens are popular

Museum Complex is open daily from 9 to 5, excluding
Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Day, and Easter. Guided
tours are given every half hour, and the last tour
usually departs at 4:30 pm. The Oldest House is
located off St Francis Street on the historic
streets of St Augustine, just five blocks from the
