St. Augustine Alligator Farm
Take a walk on the wild side and visit one of St
Augustine's oldest continuously running attractions,
the St. Augustine Alligator Farm. Located just
outside of Anastasia Island State Park, this
gigantic zoological park began with just a few small
crocodiles in 1893 when two gift shop owners decided
to add some reptiles to drum up appeal for their
gift shop. In the 1920s the alligators quickly
became the main attraction, and the farm then moved
to its current location. Today, the St. Augustine
Alligator Farm is one of the Old City's most visited
St Augustine Attractions and it has grown to include
more than 20 species of crocilians and alligators,
numerous varieties of reptiles, an impressive
collection of Galapagos Island Turtles, and a mammal and bird sanctuary. The center hosts regular
animal performances and educational demonstrations,
drawing record crowds each year.
One of the most popular exhibits this year is the
new Komodo Dragon Exhibit. Part of the largest
expansion that the center has ever completed, the
Komodo Dragon Exhibit is filled with numerous komodos and other reptiles as well as the world's
most dangerous bird, the Double-Wattled Cassowary.
Children of all ages love visiting the St. Augustine
Alligator Farm and seeing Maximo, a 1250 pound
saltwater crocodile, and the largest live animal in
the park. Visitors can see Maximo and the other
reptiles crawl through the exhibit or watch the
reptiles in the water, through the underwater
viewing windows. The center's largest animal, Gomek
is also on display nearby in the Gomek Forever
exhibit. Gomek is the largest crocodile on display
anywhere, weighing in at 2,000 pounds and stretching
more than 18 feet long.
Do
scales, tails, and crocodile smiles make you want
to run and hide? The St. Augustine Alligator Farm
has something for everyone. If you have had enough
reptiles, you can also check out the Wading Bird
Rookery exhibit. St Augustine and Florida's
coastline is home to many native wetland birds and
the rookery is filled with herons, egrets, ibis,
spoonbills, wood storks and a
variety of other
native birds. In addition to the native birds, the
Wading Bird Rookery is also home to the Birds of
Africa exhibit where you can view some of the
continent's largest bird carrion eaters and even a
few types of endangered macaws. Visitors can watch
scavenger birds like cape griffon vultures, hooded
vultures, and marabou storks during their daily
feeding demonstrations.
