Mission of Nombre de Dios

Mission of Nombre de Dios is a historically and spiritually significant place in the Old City that is popular with a lot of the vacationers that come to the city to escape. More than 400 years ago, on September 8, 1565, Pedro Menendez de Aviles landed in St Augustine and, to commemorate the date, he ceremoniously knelt and presented a wooden cross given to him by Father Francisco Lopez de Mendoza Grajales, the chaplain of the expedition. After this moment, Fr. Lopez opened the first parish and the first Mass in the Old City was given at America's First Mission, the Mission of Nombre de Dios. Inside the Prince of Peace church is a tiny chapel dedicated to Our Lady of Fatima and a statue reminds us of the historical apparitions of the Blessed Mother that appeared in Fatima, Portugal.
