Castle Otttis

Our Bed and Breakfasts in St Augustine Florida are the area’s finest. Surrounded by the charm and grandeur of historic St. Augustine as well as all of the wonderful activities that attract so many people to this interesting city every year, the St. Augustine Lodging we provide could not be more ideally located. In addition to being in the heart of the city, we offer our guests only the best amenities in our comfortable guestrooms. Hundreds of thousands of visitors flock to St. Augustine Florida each year to enjoy our family friendly attractions and romantic beaches, but many people visit the nation’s oldest city to learn more about its rich heritage through the many historical sites and buildings that can be found throughout the city. Those who visit are not surprised to see elaborate, old-fashioned architecture, but visitors are often taken aback by the presence of what appears to be a thousand-year-old Irish castle along Florida’s Atlantic Coast.

The exterior of Castle Otttis was completed in 1988; its interior was finished in 1991. This striking structure is the result of the hard work of just three visionaries who chose not to obtain the help of hired workers of any kind. Though it took four long years to complete, its builders never planned on profiting from its construction. Instead, this “landscape sculpture” was intended only to add to the beauty of the scenery while honoring Jesus Christ and providing a peaceful place for people to come together.

In order to create as authentic a replica as possible, the builders of the St. Augustine Castle consulted the Catholic Diocese of Northeast Florida, who provided them with their ideas of what a thousand-year-old abbey would have looked like. The result is a stunning, yet simple, work of art that transports visitors to another time. The exterior of the castle is composed of concrete block, steel reinforcement rods, and poured concrete. There is no glass in any of the structure’s 88 windows, so the warm ocean breezes can freely flow through the Castle Otttis. The interior was skillfully crafted with reclaimed cypress and southern heart-pine that was taken from the floor of a 100-year-old general store. Distinguishing details include eight staircases, a pulpit, an altar, a bishop’s chair, a choir loft, and benches or pews. Both spiritual and historical symbolism are integral parts of the building’s design.

On Sundays, Castle Otttis holds an interdenominational worship service and Bible study. Throughout the week, it is open to schools, churches, and other community groups who would like to tour the structure for spiritual or educational purposes. The St. Augustine Castle is also a fantastic place for intimate Castle Otttis Weddings and many couples choose this unique landmark as the setting for their ceremonies.
